The Beaux Arts Orchestra does not sound as if they are a "second thought". Their contribution is integral to the magic that is "Focus". Admittedly Getz's most challenging date and arguably his finest moment, Focus roams the vast jazz landscape outside of bop and boogaloo to fabulous and memorable effect. [The 2003 Japanese reissue is identical to the original release. Stan Getz has always claimed that Focus was the favorite of all of his recordings. This time out, rather that featuring other musicians, Stan finds himself with arranger Eddie Sauter, where the album is described as being a suite originally commissioned by Getz from composer Sauter, and to my way of thinking, no one ever managed to arrange for Getz better than Sauter.

Composed by Eddie Sauter, the truly original concept for Focus was that Sauter would provide Stan Getz with seven compositions that featured no lead melodies, only spaces for Stan to fill as he saw fit. It was a novel approach, one which brought out the best in saxophonist Stan, his producer Creed Taylor and composer and arranger Eddie Sauter.

Meaning that Stan has no foil to complement or compete against. He is allowed to float around (which he admittedly does to great effect) without the challenge of another soloist to bring out the best in his playing. 'Focus' is a very good album but I'm not sure it's really representative of Stan as an artist.
